FEWER MAGAZINES LAUNCHED IN 2012 THAN 2011: 227 LAUNCHED IN 2012 VERSUS 239 IN 2011 ACCORDING TO MEDIAFINDER.COM
NEW YORK CITY, Dec. 10, 2012 – In 2012, 227 magazines launched, compared to 239 magazines in 2011, reported MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. During the same period, only 82 magazines closed, compared to 152 magazines in 2011. .
The top categories for new magazine launches in 2012 were regional interest (24 new magazines), lifestyle (18 new magazines), crafts (18 new magazines), and food (14 new magazines). In the fourth quarter of 2012, new magazine launches included Best Life and Ranger Rick Jr.
With 82 magazine closures in 2012, the top category for magazine closures was regional interest. In the fourth quarter, magazine closures included Nintendo Power, PlayStation: The Official Magazine, Healthy Cooking, and Whole Living.
“It is heartening to see far fewer magazine closures in 2012 over 2011, although there are also fewer magazine launches,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “The luxury trend continues with the launch of magazines such as Best Life and the increased frequency of Bloomberg Pursuits from semi-annual to quarterly in 2013.”
In the business-to-business magazine sector, 31 new titles launched in 2012, such as Food Fanatics, and during the year, 16 titles ceased, such as American Artist.
